About Alexandra Headland and the Sunshine Coast
(Continued)
The fishing is good here. You can go out on organised trips to anchor above reefs and fish for reef fish such as Snapper and Coral Trout. There are also Game Fishing trips where you can participate in salt-water fly-fishing. Whale-watching trips offshore are popular from Mooloolaba and further north at Hervey Bay.
The hinterland has a lovely escarpment on the Blackall Ranges with views over about 15 miles of country to the sea. There are small townships such as Mapleton, Maleny, and Montville along a road at the top of these ranges. The view across to the Glasshouse Mountains from the south of this range is magical.
Those interested in birds and wildlife will not be disappointed. Ospreys patrol the beaches, whales can sometimes be seen from the headland, and you can spot the occasional lizard or water dragon during beachside walks. There are no crocodiles, except those at the world-famous Australia Zoo 17 miles south. The Underwater World aquarium in Mooloolaba is excellent.
